Sancerre for the Ages:
2015 Pascal Cotat Monts Damnés and La Grande Côte

Posted by Joe Salamone

When it comes to Sancerre, Cotat's village of Chavignol is a very special place.

Today, we focus on Chavignol's top two vineyards from one of the region's longstanding benchmarks.

Along with his cousin François and Edmond Vatan, Pascal Cotat has firmly established how complex and ageworthy Sancerre can be.

There have been countless bottles of Pascal Cotat with a decade or more of age that have astonished us. Every time we get a Cotat offering together, there's a sense of excitement. These are singular, incredibly captivating wines.

Chavignol is absolutely defined by its terroir - Kimmeridgian marl, the same soil as parts of Chablis - that imbues the wine with Chablis-like minerality.

Monts Damnés is the most famous vineyard site in all of the Loire - a strikingly steep vineyard that produces chalky, vibrant, laser-like wines. This wine is the more rigorous and mineral of the two Sancerres being offered today.

La Grande Côte brings an expansive grandeur to the table without sacrificing any of the vigorous Kimmeridgian mineral core. When you taste a young Grande Côte, you immediately sense all the layers and profound depth that it holds in reserve.

The 2015 vintage at Pascal Cotat produced wines of incredible punch and saturating tactile grip. The vintage delivers an almost overwhelming wash of herbs, smoky minerality, yellow fruits and citrus.

We created 6-pack pricing to encourage cellaring a few bottles. Incredible things take place as Cotat ages - the Kimmeridgian minerality starts to dominate. There's simply nothing like Cotat's Sancerres. Very happy to offer.
