"This is an historically seminal vintage from the Schäfer-Fröhlich estate and lovers of these utterly refined, complex and filigreed wines will want to do everything in their power to make sure that they secure some of these magical 2010ers." -John Gilman, View from the Cellar
At this point, there is little doubt that Tim Fröhlich is one the most gifted German winemakers of his generation.
He is the quiet maverick who took over his family's estate at the age of 21 and has since catapulted the winery into the Nahe's upper stratoshpere, right there with Emrich-Schönleber and Dönnhoff.
Today we offer out the little brother of Tim's monumental Felseneck Grosses Gewächs... and in 2010, the little brother has grown up, though it remains one of the crazy values in world-class dry Riesling.
The style of Tim's wines is always razor-sharp, uncompromising - they are super-fine wines that showcase polished shards of slate intertwined with complex herbal aromatics, fine shavings of lime zest, citrus and stone fruit.
The Felseneck is Tim's calling card - this is the vineyard that has made his reputation, a site that delivers one of the most complex expressions of minerality in the Nahe. This is the vineyard for purists.
It does not have the depth of concentration of the Grosses Gewächs, but it is lighter and more agile, the verve of the vintage coming through in beautiful, soaring technicolor.
It's hard to think of a more refreshing wine, in Chablis or Sancerre or anywhere else - stock up, for spring, for summer...because this parcel will sell through long before these seasons arrive.
Tim's dry 2010ers are young legends - Tim Fröhlich, never one to say much of anything, declared, quite factually and calmly, that these are the greatest dry Rieslings he had ever made.
And this is saying something, as anyone who has had basically any Schäfer-Fröhlich from say 2005 on will attest to.
We'll end where we began, with Gilman's great quote - because it's true! "This is an historically seminal vintage from the Schäfer-Fröhlich estate and lovers of these utterly refined, complex and filigreed wines will want to do everything in their power to make sure that they secure some of these magical 2010ers."
