An Introduction
NV Selosse Cuvée Initial
The Most Influential Producer in All of Champagne?
Anselme Selosse is THE cult Champagne producer.
He remains the most original, most game-changing producer in the entire region, with wines that are absolutely individual, always in demand and basically never available in quantity.
Well, except for today.
Only for those of you who have supported our Champagne program, we present a sizable tranche of Selosse Cuvée Initial at among the lowest pricing in the nation: $137.95. This is perhaps one of the best introductions to the Selosse style - it's always one of the best values in his micro-stable of wines.
Please keep the phrase "sizable tranche" in the appropriate context - Selosse is one of those producers whose wines are allocated out in single-bottle quantities, so we are talking about a few cases here.
We can practically guarantee that these will not last through the end of the day, so if you are interested, please respond quickly with your maximum order.
The Initial is a Blanc de Blancs coming from Selosse’s vineyards in Oger, Cramant and Avize (the domaine’s home-base) and it’s especially emblematic of the Selosse style, spending at least three full years - often closer to five - on the lees and emerging with the characteristic richness and complexity that Selosse is known and respected for. Married to this richness, however, is an incredible purity of Chardonnay, luscious golden pears and apples, a brightness pouring through the caramelized, toffee and toasted almond notes.
It's about balance; honestly it's probably one of the most extreme balancing acts in all of Champagne. All of Selosse's Champagnes are flashy, they are exuberant and gregarious, yet they also have real depth, they reward meditation.
In their youth, the Initial can be very taut; with maturity, it gains richness, a rather grand stature, the aromatics tending to explode from the glass, the flavors then growing long, broad and deep on the palate, with more nuance emerging as it breathes. Selosse's wines age, and though this could certainly be approached now, there's also the option of laying it down for an easy decade at least.
