Magical Auction Spätlese
2013 Willi Schaefer Domprobst Spätlese Auction
"This is going to be a wine that incurs some very spirited bidding, as it is brilliant!
It seems destined to be one of the greatest Auction Spätlesen produced here in the last fifteen or twenty years." -John Gilman
What blows us away about Schaefer's wines is how detailed, fine and graceful they are. They very well may be without peers in this respect.
Schaefer's auction wines consolidate all of these traits and amplify them. It's a pleasure to be able offer Willi Schaefer's 2013 Domprobst Spätlese Auction.
Auction wines shouldn’t be confused with general releases. The wines that show up in Trier are very special bottlings selected by the estates, often from single casks or small tanks of rare, superlative wine. The bottles represent some of the most magical wines in their cellars and the pinnacle of the vintage.
We love Schaefer's 2013s. They have a gorgeous snap and tension to them while remaining elegant and silky. It's this harmony, delineation and textural appeal that make them so special. On one side, you have a cool vintage (especially by recent standards) with electric, acid zing; on the other, you have low yields and the extra extract and concentration that it brings.
When we speak of low yields, we mean it in the most brutal sense. John Gilman has reported that 2013 was the smallest crop in the history of Willi Schaefer. While a really stunning collection is the silver lining for Schaefer's low yields for consumers, don't expect to find any wines from Schaefer in anything resembling good quantity.
Willi Schaefer, along with Egon Müller, Prüm and old Von Schubert, has supplied us with more mind-blowing bottles than anyone else. The 2013 Domprobst Spätlese Auction promises to become an amazing bottle with time in the cellar.
