"The Bize '09s are simply fantastic wines. Don't miss them."
This Burghound quote is from nearly a decade ago and time has proven it even more accurate.
Bize turned out incredible 2009s. The late Patrick Bize summed up the vintage as "serious and pure." It's a perfect summary of the collection.
Out of Simon Bize's Savigny wines, Vergelesses is always the most structured. Along with La Dominode, Vergelesses is Savigny's top site. It serves as the perfect summary of Bize's style: It has a stony core, loads of finesse, and just the right amount of wildness.
The 2009 Vergelesses has always been one of my favorite vintages of the wine. It's dense with layers of red and black fruit, a thrilling sinewy intensity, and notes of earth and smoke.
It's incredibly rare that I get to offer Burgundies at this level with a decade of age at sub-$100. I bought every bottle available, but it doesn't amount to that much. I'm expecting a fairly quick sell-out.

Burghound (2011): "This possesses the most elegant nose among these Savigny 1ers with complex and fresh aromas of violets, plum, earth, wet stone and a smoky hint that precede rich, intense, detailed and highly energetic middle weight flavors that are shaped by the very firm tannins on the impressively persistent finish. This doesn't have quite the same level of complexity as the Talmettes but it may in time as there is ample underlying material and like many of the Bize '09s, this is unapologetically built to age."
