"Simply on another planet"
Miani 2019 Whites

Posted by Joe Salamone

The wines of Miani are some of Italy's most sought-after cult wines. Tasting them is an unforgettable experience.

Miani makes dramatic, flamboyantly rich, ruthlessly driven, and powerful wines. But somehow, they carry all their muscle and velvet with elegance.

This helps give you a sense of what Galloni means when he writes, "Enzo Pontoni is simply on another planet... In the best years his wines frankly have no peers in Italy."

Today, we're happy to offer a range of Miani's 2019 whites. As always with Miani, the quantities available are still very modest.

The secret to Miani's success is simple: great terroir combined with  incredible conscientiousness in the vineyard and winery. Pontoni is known for selecting only the best fruit to be brought back to the winery, and once there, he's equally ruthless with his barrel-by-barrel selection for what will be bottled and what will be sold.

Miani's whites show an incredible architecture and amazing density. By all accounts, Miani's whites thrived in 2019, boasting freshness with punch and layered depth. The combination of refinement and intensity is something of a calling card for Miani.

Please give us your ideal order, and we'll try our best. Keep in mind that whenever we offer Miani it sells out quickly - we'll likely have to allocate.

2019 Friulano Filip
Eric Guido, Vinous Media: "The 2019 Friulano Filip opens slowly to a display of ripe pear and nectarine with hints of white smoke and incense. It’s on the palate where this really comes to life, with a silky display of ripe peach and a citrus twang offset by saturating minerals and bright acids that build mouthwatering tension. Inner florals and a hint of candied lime resonate for well over a minute through the salty, savory finish, making for a lasting impression. There’s amazing density to the fruit and structure here, ensuring positive evolution yet readers will be hard-pressed to keep their hands off the 2019 today.."

2019 Friulano Buri
Eric Guido, Vinous Media: "The 2019 Friulano Buri wafts up with a tropical and perfumed display that shows young mango, papaya, spiced orange peels and anise offset by honied florals. It’s silky-smooth in texture, contrasting zesty citrus with a pronounced inner sweetness, along with salty minerals which add further tension toward the finale. Hints of tannin create a tactile feel as this tapers off savory and poised. The 2019 is full of potential, but it needs a little time to flesh out."

2019 Sauvignon Blanc Zitelle
Antonio Galloni, Vinous Media: "The 2019 Sauvignon Zitelle is youthfully restrained at first, requiring a bit of coaxing to release its rich and opulent bouquet full of ripe peach and chalky minerals offset by tropical citrus. This shows glycerol-like textures, giving way to a dense display of ripe orchard fruits and sweet spice. For all of its weight, the 2019 maintains perfect balance, guided by salty acids and becoming quite floral through the finale, where notes of zesty sour lemon puckers the cheeks and punctuates the expression perfectly."

2019 Sauvignon Blanc Saurint
Antonio Galloni, Vinous Media: "The truly captivating 2019 Sauvignon Saurint entices the senses with a spicy bouquet that mixes dried yellow florals, zests of lime and sour green melon, all grounded to the earth by a hint of flowery undergrowth. It’s nearly oily in texture with medium weight, all framed by balanced acids and saturating mineral tones, coming across as almost viscous yet crunchy at the same time. This turns a bit tropical through the finale, staining the palate in notes of papaya, nectarine and sour citrus. The 2019 Saurint could use a few years in the cellar to shake off some of its baby fat, but afterwards should be an epic expression of Sauvignon from Miani."
