"No Peers in Italy"
2011 Miani Friulano Buri &
2011 Miani Ribolla Gialla Pettarin
Just a Few Cases...
"Enzo Pontoni is simply on another planet. In the best years his wines frankly have no peers in Italy. The textural richness and depth Pontoni coaxes from his old-vine parcels is a marvel."
- Antonio Galloni, Wine Advocate
Between the two wines on offer today, there are just a few cases available. They are likely to go very quickly.
To sum up Miani's wines in just a few words: they are some of most fascinating, most sought after and rarest wines in all of Italy.
Miani's whites can hold their own with the most exulted wines. They boast a flamboyant concentration and lavish velvety textures all married to muscular detail and an intense streak of minerality.
The easy comparison that I keep returning to is the great whites of Coche-Dury.
Miani's Friulano Buri offers up finely interwoven stone fruits with a deep minerality and a powerful, regal elegance. The Ribolla Gialla Pettarin takes what's typically an angular, mineral grape and gives it a layered complexity with exotic flourishes.
In the vineyards, Pontoni is notoriously fastidious about both tending his vines and about selecting only the best fruit to be brought back to the winery. In the winery, he's equally ruthless with barrel-by-barrel selection for what will be bottled and what will be sold off.
His 2011s combine the richness of the 09 vintage with the nerviness of the 2010. The combination is very impressive and just lovely.
