"This serious contemplative Champagne is lights-out."- Antonio Galloni
Chartogne-Taillet's lineup reaches its pinnacle in the exactingly rendered single-vineyard bottlings. They highlight just how careful the winemaking is.
Alexandre Chartogne has followed the uber-conscientious viticulture that he was introduced to while working at Selosse. This focus on viticulture, along with sensitive winemaking, shows in the complexity and soil expression of the wines.
Just over a month ago, we offered Chartogne-Taillet's 2019 Blanc de Blancs Heurtebise. Today, we return with another 2019 Blanc de Blancs, Chemin de Reims.
Like so much from the 2019 Champagne vintage, we've been impressed by Chartogne-Taillet's collection.
Chartogne-Taillet's 2019s have an impressive purity, harmony, and an energetic structure. The total package is thrilling.
The Chemin de Reims, first bottled as a single-vineyard champagne in 2011, is an extraordinary example of Chartogne’s skillful winemaking. The vineyard Chemin de Reims has a very long history; it was first mentioned by name in the ninth century. The south-facing slope is located in the southern part of Merfy. It has iron-rich sandy soils planted with 100% Chardonnay.
As Galloni's note makes clear, the Chemin de Reims is one of the stars of the collection. It's expansive, layered, and ultra-clear. The way it combines complex notes of herbs, stony minerality, and earth with a bright agility is thrilling.
Alexandre Chartogne's skill is on bold display in this wine. Do not miss this.

Antonio Galloni, Vinous Media: "The 2019 Extra-Brut Chemin de Reims is a bundle of focus and tension. I would prefer to cellar it for a few years as it is quite tense. Chalk crushed rocks salt white pepper and mint all race across the palate. This chiseled Blanc de Blancs is terrific a wine of tremendous substance and palate presence. This serious contemplative Champagne is lights-out."
