The 2012 possesses all of the qualities that we look for in top vintages of Masseto. 2012 was a cooler vintage in Tuscany, which means that this is an especially balanced and finessed version of the wine.
Galloni writes that the 2012 Masseto "possesses magnificent complexity [and] exceptional balance." That sums it up very well. It's rare for a vintage of Masseto to reach such a brilliant equilibrium.
There are three vineyards that are used for Masseto. Depending on the vintage, all or just some of the vineyards will be selected for bottling. Regardless, it represents a painstaking selection and then, a masterful blend to achieve the unique completeness and harmony that is Masseto.
1988 was the first vintage of Masseto. It quickly became one of the most important and collected wines of Tuscany. Since it has enjoyed such long-standing fame, I don't want to belabor this. You know the deal when it comes to Masseto. To wrap things up, I'll just say that 2012 is a beautiful and extraordinary edition of this great wine.
