We're fond of calling Hureau's wines "honest." It's intended to be high praise.
What we mean is that they are subtle and unmediated expressions of Cabernet Franc. There's no effort made to buff out all of the edges, and the wines are more characterful and compelling for it.
Much of the attention that Saumur receives goes to producers with grand ambitions - Roches Neuves, Clos Rougeard, Guiberteau, Collier, etc. We're fans of these wines, but they carry a certain polish and drive towards perfection that's appropriate to the world stage they want to participate in. Hureau operates differently. Hureau turns out very impressive wines but does so without flash or artifice.
The 2017 Favettes has incredible length, poise, and finesse. The vintage produced a higher-toned wine than is typical, but also one of serious depth, harmony, and completeness. It has a profoundly textural and gripping minerality. The area around Saumur is famous for tuffeau soils.
Favettes is a 75-year-old well situated single vineyard that, like all of Hureau's wines, is farmed organically. It possesses amazing depth and internal architecture.
The 2017 Favettes was the star of an extensive tasting. It had a captivating amount of soulfulness to it. Wines this forthright and this nicely executed are rare. While not loud or obvious, everyone took notice of it. It's simply that remarkable.
