Razor Cut, Singular Minerality
2013 Schafer-Frohlich Kupfergrube GG
"Tim Fröhlich is making some of the most compellingly beautiful wines in the world of wine today and his are reference point quality for the vintage." -John Gilman
The Kupfergrube is a largely volcanic site with a high iron content. It offers up an utterly singular expression of minerality.
The vineyard has long been an obsession of ours.
Tim Fröhlich is without a doubt one of the most skillful and dedicated winemakers in Germany. He's dead serious in the vineyard about restricting yields and he applies the same level of dedication in the cellar. These are intense, first-class wines. Kupfergrube brings Fröhlich's intensity into a singular and profoundly compelling direction.

His 2013 Kupfergrube is really a knockout expression of this site. Gilman writes that the 2013 Kupfergrube "is as fine an example of this great terroir" as he's tasted from Tim Fröhlich.
The Nahe was the star of the 2013 vintage, having largely been spared from the difficult weather that many other regions in Germany endured. Schäfer-Fröhlich's top wines thrived in the vintage conditions. As a whole, they offer a beautiful clarity, intense cut and a deep, layered complexity. The 2013 Kupfergrube specifically boasts a precise, multi-faceted minerality, a brilliant driving core of ripe citrus and a parade of stone fruits with subtle exotic nuances.
Fröhlich's wines are extreme. It can feel that every edge has been sharpened, every detail brought into intense, clear focus. Even in this context, Kupfergrube stands out as his most intensely unique wine and one of our favorite of his GGs. With only 0.5ha, it is also his rarest.
