Radiance in Barolo
2011 Giuseppe Mascarello Barolo Monprivato

"Some of the most elegant, refined and brilliant wines in all of Piemonte..." -John Gilman

Monprivato stands out with its elegance, its clarity of expression and its purity of fruit, earth and flower.

It is without a doubt one of the greatest expressions of Piedmont. Few wines achieve the finesse that Mauro Mascarello coaxes from this top site. Monprivato is a special wine. Year after year, it's one of our favorite Piedmont wines. This speaks volumes to just how consistent it is.

The 2011 vintage in Barolo will undoubtedly be in the shadow of the thrilling 2010s. It's likely that the vintage will never get its due, which is a shame. At their best, the 2011s offer beautiful immediacy of experience with plenty of poise.

Antonio Galloni captures the vintage well when he writes: "the 2011 Barolos continue to surprise. Radiant, open and already quite expressive, the 2011s show terrific potential."

The track record for Monprivato excelling in warmer vintages is impressive. The first bottle of Monprivato to convince us of just how awesome this wine could be was a 1990. It's a safe bet that when the dust settles, Monprivato will be one of the stars of the vintage.

One of the hallmarks of Monprivato is its stunning finesse. In vintages like 2011, Monprivato maintains an amazing elegance and agility while assuming a regal power and fascinating level of nuance. Expect a generous dose of vivid fruit and floral notes (roses, violets, etc.) with crystalline purity, mingled with spices and complex minerality.

Monprivato is a distance runner. Nearly every vintage enjoys a long life in the cellar. It can age for decades, growing increasingly elegant and transparent. Without fail, I get excited with every new release of Monprivato. There's always so much promise.
