Northern Rhône: Mag Edition
2012 Gonon Saint-Joseph Magnums

Last week, we sent an offer on Gonon's 2012 Saint-Joseph with trepidation. And for good reason - it blew up.

Magnums of Gonon's Saint-Joseph are very, very rare.

From what we've seen once you taste Gonon's wines, there's no going back. This goes a long way in explaining their massive following that seems to grow daily.

From Saint-Joseph's steep granite slopes, the Gonon brothers coax out an incarnation of Syrah that is delicate, detailed and entirely without artifice. This is Saint-Joseph left slightly wild, with wisps of smoke and spice, of earth and deep blue fruit, all wrapped around a rock-solid mineral core. Gonon's wines are in the style of the old-guard - Verset, Gentaz and Trollat, the latter leased his old vines to the Gonon brothers.

2012 in the Northern Rhône is the kind of vintage that we love. We love its drinkability, its beautiful balance and the ultra-fine ageworthy structure. 2012 is pure and classic, capturing the elegant side of Saint-Joseph. Think of the brightness of '10 with a more yielding structure and a touch more delicacy.

I'm going to end this here. Most of you already know the deal with Gonon and these mags won't last.
