Stefan Vetter: Origin Story

Posted by Joe Salamone

This wine has never been imported before and we have only a few cases available.

The brilliant wines of Stefan Vetter are incredibly famous. Eric Asimov in the New York Times has called them a "revelation of how good sylvaner can be". They are also shockingly unknown.

While Sylvaner remains a relatively misunderstood grape, this is changing quickly as champions like Klaus Peter Keller put more focus on reviving the reputation of this historic grape.

Vetter's Sylvaners have steadily gained a small but passionate following. His wines are lovingly collected by people who cherish unapologetically mineral wines with a brisk, spring-garden florality and a mountain-water salinity.

Today we present the Stefan Vetter origin story in the form of the first vineyard he worked after starting his eponymous domaine, the Castelle Kirchberg - he calls the wine simply "CK."

The CK bottling shows a more floral profile with even more mid-palate density than Vetter's other Sylvaners. Still, it loses none of the incisive cut and grip that has made Vetter's name, especially in an epic vintage like 2019.

At $59.95 this is a must-buy for any Vetter fan or anyone who cherishes crystalline and mineral white wines. More than one serious taster has blinded Vetter's top Sylvaners and swore that they were Grand Cru Chablis.

The reputation of Sylvaner, as Asimov noted in the Times, has been watered down by oceans of cheap versions. This is disappointing because the greatest expressions of Sylvaner are among the pristine expressions of whites around. Catch the Sylvaner grape in prime form and you'll encounter a wild earth and stone-driven complexity that seems to capture something absolutely elemental.

Vetter’s profound Sylvaner CK offers a glimpse into the promise of this grape. Sadly, the quantities are paltry. These will disappear.
