Rare library releases direct from the cellar of Ulli Stein.
On Thursday, we offered a tranche of Stein's 2015 Ohne Sekt Reserve, named for his mother Erna.
Stein was one of the early German producers to explore winemaking without added sulfur with the "Ohne" bottling. As we wrote, Stein started making Ohne after having a bottle of Overnoy with Danish sommeliers.
Today we offer three rare library releases, also direct from Stein's cellar, two of which are named for Stein's father, Heinrich.
There are two key differences in the bottlings. The regular "Ohne" is picked earlier and aged in old Fuder. The "Ohne" Heinrich is picked later, representing the top selections, and is aged in smaller barrels.
Thus, the regular "Ohne" tends to be more lithe, mineral, and delicate; the "Ohne" Heinrich is more bass-toned, broad-shouldered, deep, and powerful.
All bottlings are direct from the cellar. This is an offering you will likely never see again.
The beautiful fascination of these wines is not that they are "natural" wines. In fact, the radical complexity of the wines is that they are profound, compelling Mosel Riesling. The energy, the minerality, and the form are still there. It's just different.
We've provided more information on the selections below. There is precious little to go around, as you can probably imagine.
