Niederhauser Hermannshöhle is Dönnhoff’s crown jewel.
If we had to sum up Dönnhoff's style briefly, we'd say that the wines have a gorgeous polish, beautiful proportions and a sense of weightless elegance.
It's these qualities that have allowed Dönnhoff to be one of Germany’s benchmark producers for decades.
The 2017s showcase all of this with a staggering articulation. The wines have a cool fruited, mineral-laden glossiness and luminous playfulness. Unsurprisingly, the Hermannshöhle Spätlese offers one of the most persuasive snapshots of Dönnhoff’s success in the vintage.
Niederhauser Hermannshöhle is the family’s oldest site. It is without a doubt one of the Nahe’s top vineyard sites. The wines rival the best anywhere with power, length, and elegance. Above all, Hermannshöhle has a refinement and completeness that separates it from the pack.
The 2017 Hermannshöhle has a bright, driving length that really hits the salivary glands and gives you an impression of nimbleness. At the same time, there's a gripping density that is packed full of stone fruits, citrus, herbs and stoniness. As always, it offers up tons of finesse, lift and clarity.
I'll bring this to a close. Dönnhoff is one of the legends of German wine and his Hermannshöhle Spätlese is one of their star bottles. This is certainly the case in 2017. I'd suggest that you pick up a 4-pack, because it will be a lot of fun to track over the next decade.
