Stunning 2010 Bordeaux Value
2010 Chateau La Grave Fronsac
Purity/Honesty in Bordeaux
A Bordeaux offer in July is one of those crazy moves that you only make if you really like the wine and know it won't be around for long.
That's the deal with 2010 Chateau La Grave's Fronsac.
We don't offer Bordeaux very often, but when we tasted La Grave's 2010 a group of us immediately started planning an offer.
We've been fans of Chateau La Grave for some time, but the 2010 is the best we've tasted.
For us, 2010 is an ideal Bordeaux vintage. There's plenty of intensity, but there's also an old school, cooler vintage feel to it. La Grave's 2010 Fronsac highlights the purity and the mineral and the savory notes that 2010 at its best delivers.
It's La Grave's balance, acid spine and pristinely expressive graphite minerality and spice that make it so compelling. It's been a very long time since the staff has been so excited about a sub-$65 Bordeaux.
The wine's purity and balance can be explained (at least in part) by La Grave's owner, Paul Barre's, dedication to biodynamic farming. He was one of the earliest converts to organic, and then biodynamic, viticulture in Bordeaux. In a region where these practices are still rare, Barre has served as an inspiration for other growers in the area.
Whatever the reasons, La Grave is just gorgeous wine. The dark fruits (plums and cherries) are steeped in a dark, emphatic minerality and complex spice notes. There's a combination of structure and precision that we rarely see with Bordeaux at this price point.
For the value, for how successful this wine is in 2010, this is something to stock up on - so we've created 6-packs. While approachable now, especially with a decant, La Grave's 2010 Fronsac will blossom in the cellar for the next 8-10 years.
