Lowest Price in the Nation
"Vilmart & Cie. is not only one of the greatest grower-estates in Champagne, but one of the finest champagne producers of any type in the region." -Peter Liem, ChampagneGuide
This is an offer we've been waiting to send out for a long-time.
Vilmart is one of the top growers and 2008 is one of the best young Champagne vintages we've tasted, not to mention that 2008 is a personal favorite of ours.
2008 in Champagne is a vintage to go deep on, especially with a grower with a track record for aging like Vilmart.
Vilmart is a producer that we offer almost every vintage. We typically sell out very quickly, especially in top vintages.
What makes us love the 2008 is the way it combines a beautifully high acid structure with good ripeness and concentration. 2002 and 1996 were great vintages, but 2008's brightness and punch deliver a combination that we haven't seen since the 1988 vintage. For those lucky enough to have had a Champagne from 88, you know just how awesome the vintage is and how well it's aging.
As far as cult wines go, Vilmart keeps a fairly low profile. However, those who know it are fanatics. They range from Champagne experts, to wine geeks, to blue chip collectors.
Antonio Galloni pretty much nails it when he writes, "Laurent Champs crafts impeccable, elegant Champagnes of the highest level."
Regardless of the cuvée, Vilmart walks a fine, riveting line. And that's what makes the wines so special and so compelling. They manage to deliver a palate-saturating richness that's combined with the utmost elegance and a fine tuned harmony. It's this harmony and concentration that allows them to age so beautifully.
The 2008 Grand Cellier d'Or (based on the usual blend of 80% Chard, 20% Pinot) shows the signature fullness of body combined with an incredible clarity and sense of poise. There's a polished, sleek style to the wine as it delivers a gorgeously interwoven mix of minerals, stone fruits and spice.
Vilmart pulls out all stops to ensure the quality of their wines - low yields, organic viticulture, etc. - and the wines show just how much this commitment pays off. There's also thoughtful, fairly original winemaking in play in the use of wooden barrels and preventing malolactic fermentation to maintain a kinetic energy.
Vilmart's 2008 Grand Cellier d'Or is highly recommended. Without a doubt, 2008 will be remembered as a very special, long lived vintage. If the past decade is any indication, vintages that combine this much verve with a sense of completeness are growing incredibly rare.
