2001 Poggio di Sotto
Brunello di Montalcino
Elegance and Soul in Brunello
"Proprietor Piero Palmucci makes sublime, elegant Brunellos of rare pedigree." -Antonio Galloni
Poggio di Sotto's Brunellos are some of the most loved, most soulful Brunellos.
The descriptor that comes up again and again is "Burgundian." That's the level of elegance and breeding that they display. This is particularly the case in the 2001 vintage.
The 2001 vintage in Brunello produced wines with gorgeously delineated aromatics, ultra-refined fruit, and finesse. 2001 is easily one of the best vintages of the past decade. Twelve years later, Poggio di Sotto's Brunello is just starting to really show the breeding and overall harmony of the vintage.
For all of the brooding power, for all of the density, Poggio di Sotto also has clarity, a striking complexity that calls to mind Montevertine's Pergole Torte or Soldera's legendary Brunellos. This shouldn't be surprising as Giulio Gambelli, a legendary master of Sangiovese, consulted at all three.
Poggio di Sotto's 2001 Brunello offers a finely tuned balance with high-toned aromatics, a truly brilliant register that only Sangiovese seems capable of hitting, all woven with sun and soil and structure.
Terroir, and its ultimate expression via the Sangiovese grape, has always been Poggio di Sotto's persevering goal. Elisabeta and Piero Palmucci set out in the 1980s to find the ideal piece of land in Brunello. They found it in 1989: a plot of land around Castelnuovo dell’Abate with marly soil, situated at 250-400 meters altitude, where the vines have perfect southern exposure. Sadly, Palmucci's era came to an end in 2011. Without any heirs, Palmucci sold Poggio di Sotto to Claudio Tipa, owner of Colle Massari and Grattamacco.
Poggio di Sotto's 01 Brunello allows a glimpse of one of Tuscany's most meticulous and uncompromising spirits in a great vintage, with age on it and direct from the winery's cellar. It's not often that we're able to write lines like this. Our advice is don't miss it.
