Conterno's wines exist in their own realm.
The explanation for how incredibly good Conterno's wines are is easy: Roberto’s exacting standards focus on perfecting every little detail. The sum is an almost logic-defying profundity.
Roberto Conterno is one of the world's greatest winemakers.
Today, I'm happy to offer Conterno's 2016 Barolo Arione for $334.95 per bottle.
The 2016 Barolos are a dream brew of depth, verve, and clarity. It possesses ripe vintage concentration with cool vintage elegance and precision. As you would expect, Conterno's 2016s are jaw-dropping.
Barolo Arione is a legendary vineyard bordering Cascina Francia. Conterno released it for the first time in 2015. One of the best testimonies to its quality is the fact that Conterno included a portion of Arione in his 2015 Monfortino. There was no Monfortino made in 2016, so everything went into the Arione bottling.
It is a monumental Barolo. The grandeur and architecture of the wine can border on stupefying at times. When Galloni writes that the 2016 Arione is: "phenomenally long... It’s the sort of wine I would like to spend a few hours with," he gives you a good sense of the wine's incredible depth and the mystery of the wine as well.
The 2016 is simply epic and flaunts why the wine is so important. It reaches a level of concentration and ageability that's truly stunning.

Antonio Galloni, Vinous Media: "Antonio Galloni, Vinous Media: "The 2016 Barolo Arione is a sort of synthesis between the Cerretta and Francia. It has the red fruit profile and floral overtones of the former with a feeling of structure that recalls the later. Arione Barolos always have a distinctly wild, feral quality strong on iron and mineral notes, which is very much the case here. Logically, the 2016 needs a bit of time to soften, but it is super-impressive. It is perhaps a bit less polished than the Francia, but it also has a phenomenally long, classically austere finish. It’s the sort of wine I would like to spend a few hours with. In 2016, there is no Monfortino, so all of the Arione wine is in this bottling, unlike 2015, when a portion was blended into Monfortino."
