Over the last five years, Lafarge has become one of my absolute favorite producers in Burgundy.
There's a depth and soulfulness to the wines that I love. Taste a Lafarge with a few decades of age and it's impossible not to be convinced of how important and simply great they are.
I love 2011 Volnays. There's no doubt that this is one of the sweet spots of the vintage. 2011 Volnays possess a deep earthy minerality, velvety muscularity and tensile elegance. Add it all up and it's simply a gorgeous cast of wines.
As it always is, Lafarge's 2011 Clos des Chênes is one of three or four top examples of Volnay in 2011. The Clos des Chênes is Lafarge's top site. There's a level of refinement that makes it stand out along with a delicately balanced long finish.
Lafarge is known for possessing beautiful clarity matched to a sturdy structure. The 2011 Clos des Chênes is a textbook example of this. It's a bottle that will sing after a decade or two in the cellar. The precision, concentration and balance make the ageability factor obvious.
It's been sad to observe that as my obsession with Lafarge has grown, finding his top wines in quantity has been a major headache. Chênes has become a rare luxury and I'm very happy to be able to offer it today.
