"Tension, energy and cut.. "
2008 Agrapart L’Avizoise
Blanc de Blancs Extra Brut
Judging by the response to our offers and the general buzz, word has finally gotten out about Agrapart.
For years and years, Agrapart has delivered some of the most riveting, deeply etched and piercingly mineral Chardonnays in Champagne.
Their 2008s make this so obvious that it's impossible not to take notice.
Before continuing, I should underscore how limited this is. One of the reasons that Agrapart hasn't totally blown up is how pitifully small the production is. I feel lucky to be able to make this very modestly sized offering.
L’Avizoise is sourced from two vineyards, Les Robarts and La Voie d’Epernay, where vines up to 50 years old sit on argilo-calcaire soils. It's aged in demi-muid.
Compared to Agrapart's Mineral that we offered a while back and comes from chalky soils, L’Avizoise's argilo-calcaire soils produce a slightly rounder and more powerful wine. Don't let this description fool you. For all of its textural presence, there's still an incredible tension and precision to the wine. The extra body provides the platform for a ridiculously complex minerality to emerge.
There's no doubt that 2008 is a great Champagne vintage that, along with 1996 and 2002, will be remembered as being special for decades. There's so much energy, clarity, length and harmony. Even in this context, Agrapart's 2008s stand out.
