Bertheau's wines are personal favorites. They exemplify how graceful and pure Burgundy can be.
Sadly, it's a small domaine, and finding the wines has become challenging. It's been almost two years since I've been able to offer the wines.
After much searching, I'm very happy to offer one of my favorite Bertheau bottlings in a vintage where they were wildly successful - the 2016 Chambolle-Musigny 1er Charmes for $129.95 per bottle and $119.95 in 4-packs, which is the lowest price around by a healthy margin.
Bertheau's 2016s are classic, pure, concentrated, and suave. It's exactly the sort of vintage where Bertheau hits a home run. Few producers do purity and transparency better than Bertheau. This is amplified in 2016.
Their Charmes encapsulate the utter beauty of Chambolle in an archetypal and gorgeous way. In short, Charmes offers a perfect glimpse into what makes Bertheau so special. It delivers an incredible amount of finesse and stunning refinement. A bottle of '92 Charmes that we drank a year ago was stunning and totally unforgettable.
The 2016 Charmes boasts a lovely cast of aromatics - flowers, spice, and dark red fruits all intermingle with a sleek mineral thread. What really makes the 2016 Charmes stand out is its detail, elegance, and seductive texture.
The 2016 vintage in Chambolle was brutal when it came to yields. Frost ripped through the vineyards. As quoted in Burghound, François Bertheau estimates that yields were down 50%. For a domaine that's only 6.5ha and whose parcel in Charmes is a mere 0.66ha, this adds up to an ugly situation.
I feel really lucky to have landed this parcel. I wish the quantities were better, but after such a long dry spell, I'll take what I can get of this beguiling Chambolle.

Burghound: "This is also quite spicy but it's also more perfumed with cool and airy aromas of plum, violet and lavender. Supple, round and utterly delicious and seductive medium weight flavors possess a polished mouthfeel thanks to the moderately firm but fine-grained tannins that possess first-rate depth on the highly persistent and notably firm finish. This notably rich effort is textbook Charmes that should drink well young will need at least 12+ years to arrive at its full apogee."
