One of Barolo's Greatest
2007 G. Mascarello Barolo Monprivato
$10 Below the Only Other Pricing in the Nation
"I have made many mistakes with Monprivato over the years; they have all involved not cellaring enough of the great vintages." -Antonio Galloni, Wine Advocate
Giuseppe Mascarello's Monprivato is one of the great monuments of the Piedmont, on the same level as Giacosa's Riservas or Conterno's Monfortino.
It is a wine I personally cellar every year; a wine that we as a store are deeply invested in every year, both financially and emotionally.
Galloni’s review of the 2007 Monprivato reads more like a love letter than a descriptive analysis. I love his last line especially, because, having personally collected the Monprivato for the last couple decades, I think it particularly resonates with my own sentiments:
"The 2007 Barolo Monprivato is flat-out stunning. Deep, powerfully layered and totally impeccable, the 2007 possesses marvelous class and harmony. Readers will have a hard time choosing among the numerous great vintages that are on the market. My advice? Readers should own at least some of all of the wines from 2004-2007. I have made many mistakes with Monprivato over the years; they have all involved not cellaring enough of the great vintages."
Truly, not cellaring enough Monprivato is sort of the only mistake you can make here.
I say this every year, but if you have not yet gotten to experience Mascarello’s Monprivato, I strongly urge you to invest here. This is one of those benchmark wines, a siren call of all Nebbiolo’s potential, all Barolo’s pedigree, in an utterly beguiling package, brimming with finesse and incredible nuance that’s perhaps only rivaled elsewhere in the world in the greatest Burgundies, Champagnes and Rieslings.
Mascarello is truly on not only the same level as this appellation’s other resident geniuses, Giacomo Conterno, Bruno Giacosa and Bartolo Mascarello, but he's also hitting the same highs that only the world's best winemakers, no matter which region, can hit. And hit reliably.
As with all the top Monprivatos, the 2007 deserves a few years in the cellar to come into top form; after that, it should improve for several decades, revealing layer after profound layer of the deep, dark cherry fruit, the dried rose petals, the orange blossom perfume, spice-laden and charred black earth with subtle components of tar and worn leather.
When great vintages of Monprivato hit their 10th, 15th, 20th birthdays and beyond, the complexity these achieve leaves you grasping for suitable new words and descriptors.
We’re proud to have supported Mascarello’s Monprivato every year since Crush's inception and, thanks to our loyalty, we’re able to offer a very sizable tranche of this outstanding 2007. Currently, there’s just one other retailer with the 2007 on offer, and our pricing starts at $10 below that. Today’s pricing will last through the end of next week - or until the parcel runs out, whichever comes first.
