The 2008 Crichet Pajé stands out as one of the greatest Barbarescos that I've ever tasted. The only competition comes from old Giacosa Red Labels.
Roagna turns out no-nonsense, old-school styled Barolos and Barbarescos. Here long-macerations, late harvests, low yields, and late releases are the norm. This combined with top holdings produces deeply complex and slow to unfold Nebbiolos.
The 2008s flaunt all the aromatic nuance that Roagna captures from the grape. We love 2008 in Piedmont. 2008 is a vintage of, above all else, classical proportions and purity. There's an amazing precision and terroir expression. Very few vintages deliver such completeness, such harmony.
It's difficult to think of Roagna and not think of the Pajé vineyard. Pajé often seems like the beating heart of the estate. Crichet Pajé comes from a choice, incredibly limestone rich portion of the vineyard that's at the top of the hill. The site is home to very old vines, some of which are ungrafted.
The 2008 Crichet Pajé is an epic wine. There's jaw-dropping structure and depth. However, it's the 2008's finesse, purity, and detail that really announces its greatness.
