Out of the two Spätlesen that Schaefer often releases from Domprobst (#s 5 and 10), the #10 is the more mineral and linear of the two, and the #5 is more about layered fruit. There's no doubt that it's easy to overlook the subtlety of the #10 next to the #5. However, its quietly elegant beauty captures Schaefer's serene precision in a very special way.

In 2017, the Spätlese has the delicate, sleek elegance that's common of the wine. However, it also assumes more of an unusually sculpted grandeur. The combination is really impressive. Mosel Fine Wines sums up the wine nicely when they write: "What a fantastic Spätlese!" There's an outrageous purity to the wine's citrus and salty mineral notes.

I'll bring this to a close. Willi Schaefer is one of the most beloved producers in all of Germany. The 2017s are simply stunning, and their production was down 50%.
