Willi Schaefer is one of the most beloved producers in all of Germany. The 2017s are simply stunning and their production was down 50%. For a small estate where demand very often outstrips supply, this is an ugly combination.

Each year, the Domprobst Spätlese #5 is among the highpoints of Schaefer's strong collection. In 2017, there's little doubt about that. It's always the most layered and complicated of Schafer's Spätlesen.

Along with the richly complex notes of spice, stone fruits and floral notes, you can expect Schaefer's unparalleled steely fine-ness and serene precision. The combination is really, really compelling.

Mosel Fine Wines' Jean Fisch and David Rayer call the 2017 a "mindboggling Spätlese in the making." That gives you a decent sense of just how epic the 2017 Spätlese #5 is. The combination of cut, detail and depth is impossible to deny.

This is our first offering of 2017 Willi Schaefer and, in some ways, we went straight to the best. I can expect this modest parcel to disappear quickly.
