As Galloni's note above makes clear, the 2020 Pira Vecchie Viti is simply amazing. It's a high point of both an incredible collection and of the entire vintage throughout Piedmont.Â
Roagna's Pira is always one of the most finessed and lifted of their collection. The Roagna family purchased the monopole site in 1989. It is endowed with vines going back to 1937 and has a fascinating soil composition of iron-rich limestone and blue and grey marls.
The Vecchie Viti comes from Roagna's oldest vines, including ungrafted ones and vines that were planted in 1937. It offers an incredible amount of nuance and depth.
The 2020 Pira VV is shocking in how the wine manages to combine such density and elegance. The wine covers an amazing range - jaw-dropping - layered red fruits, game, earth, tar, herbs, spice, etc.
As Galloni's note above hints, the 2020 Pira Vecchie Viti is simply a jaw-dropping wine. When the dust settles, it will certainly be among the vintage's highlights.

At times quite powerful and at other moments much more reserved, the 2020 is a striking, wonderfully dynamic wine. Crushed flowers, spice, herbs, coffee and pine are some of the many notes that continue to open as the 2020 blossoms in the glass. Potent tannins drive the finish, suggesting that at least a few years in bottle will be beneficial."
