"The balance is impeccable"
2020 Drouhin Beaune 1er Cru Clos des Mouches Blanc

Posted by Ian McFadden

Clos des Mouches Blanc is one of the true insider wines in all of Burgundy.

The wine always seems to find its way into cellars next to the likes of Ramonet, Leflaive, Coche, and Roulot.  It's a truly serious wine from the humble origins of a Beaune 1er Cru.

The 2020 is a stunning edition of the wine. It works on an incredible scale with focus and grace. This is a vintage where the wine's breeding really shines.

I suggest that you go deep on the 2020 Clos des Mouches. The 2020 white Burgundies are special. The more that I taste the wines the more excited I am about them.

Clos des Mouches was one of the first land purchases made by a family that has built one of the more impressive lineups of vineyard ownership and remains a truly significant wine in the Burgundy landscape almost 100 years after Maurice Drouhin acquired the vines.

The beauty of Clos des Mouches is the way that it combines accessibility with ageability, serious mineral complexity, and a suave, easygoing, drinkable nature.  I have had numerous bottles from the 1980s that have shown brilliantly and Burghound has certainly raved about bottles going back well over half a century.  With that being said, there is so often an immediacy to Clos des Mouches Blanc that makes it comforting in its youth.

Clos des Mouches represents the beating heart of one of our favorite estates in all of Burgundy. I'm very happy to offer the 2020 at sharp pricing.

Burghound: "Ripe aromas of apple and pear compote possess more prominent floral nuances along with hints of wood toast and just sliced fennel. There is very fine volume to the fleshy and plump flavors that also retain good precision thanks to a similar citrus-tinged acid spine on the sneaky long finish. This is a wine of contrasts as the mid-palate is rich to the point of opulence, yet the balance is impeccable. Note that this should drink well relatively early on."
