The Beating Heart of Cornas: 2013 Clape Cornas

The Beating Heart of Cornas
2013 Clape Cornas

For us, Clape nailed it in 2013.

We hold the vintage in very high regard. But Clape took everything to another level.

2013 in the Northern Rhône produced mineral, structured wines with a vibrant core of acidity. Generally, speaking it's a beautiful vintage and exactly how we like our wines. As is often the case, Clape's 2013 Cornas is a monument of the vintage.

This domaine has been a reference point in Rhône since Auguste Clape first started in 1949. With Thierry Allemand, he is one of the two rock stars of Cornas. If Allemand is Cornas as suave, fine and bright, Clape shows the region's dark side, wonderfully bone-crushing and savory. With time in the cellar, the wines transform to reveal a refined core of herbal elegance.

We've opened so many stunning bottles of old Clape that we're convinced that few other Cornas can rival the age-worthiness of Clape. Clape's 1988 Cornas is a legendary bottle at Crush.

We have very high hopes for the 2013. There's such a great interplay of tannin, acidity and a stern core of granite minerality. 2013 is a particularly savory, energetic and precise vintage for Clape's Cornas. That gets to the essence of what makes this bottle so exciting.

There's no doubt that Clape has produced more powerful vintages, but it's ones like 2013 that we are consistently the most fond of, especially with a decade or more in the cellar. Wines like 2013 Clape lay bare the beating heart of Cornas.
