The Benchmark Muscadet: 2017 Pepiere Clos des Briords

Posted by Joe Salamone

Clos des Briords takes Muscadet close to its Platonic ideal of jagged saline minerality.

There's a beautiful honesty to Briords that causes us to buy it by the case every vintage. You might find more powerful and richer Muscadets, but Briords is unrivaled when it comes to luminous transparency and cut.

This is our first Briords offering in a number of vintages. At this point, it's a wine that sells itself. However, the 2017 is such a successful vintage for the wine that it demands an email. To miss out on it would be a mistake.

The 2017 is a concentrated, racy and vivid vintage of Briords. A combination of spring frosts, a warm early summer and a beautiful late summer both restricted yields and produced gorgeously clean grapes. It's a really nice package - presence, length and pristine clarity.

The Clos des Briords vineyard contains some of the domaine's oldest vines, many dating back to 1930. The exposition is just about perfect, though what's critical are the complex soils: A deep layer of clay and crumbly granite runs over the hard granite underneath. It's this geology that allows the grapes to ripen slowly, building the complexity and penetrating mineral depth that makes Briords so unique.

Briords is a wine that we love and it makes us really happy to have such a strong vintage on our hands. The only major downside is that the 2017 is more much limited than ususual, so we suggest that you jump on this now.
