The Palo Blanco is one of the highlights of Envínate's impressive lineup.
In 2018, the wine is absolutely stunning. Over the past six months, I've tasted the wine multiple times and it never failed to be greatly impressive.
As Luis Gutiérrez's quote above makes clear, the 2018s at Envínate are great and the Palo Blanco is easily in the running for the best white that they've made to date.
It boasts a pristine and emphatic mineral thread. There are gorgeously clear layered fruits and a seriously complex mineral core. The amount of detail and class is shocking.
Palo Blanco is based on Listan Blanco (aka Palomino in sherry country). They have a fascinating ability for transmitting terroir and the wine really exploits this characteristic. The wine is racy, focused, and has a deeply complex smoky signature.
Palo Blanco is sourced from one-hundred-year-old vines that dig into volcanic soils. The vines are braided following the local tradition called cordón trenzado.
Few wines are hunted down like Envínate. When you taste the wines, the explanation for the excitement becomes clear. They are some of the most beautifully rendered and fascinating wines around. The 2018 Palo Blanco is a monument to their work.

Luis Gutiérrez, The Wine Advocate: "An outstanding white from the Valle de la Orotava, the 2018 Palo Blanco is named after a zone or "paraje" from the village of Los Realejos that produced Listán Blanco of a strong and different personality. In 2018, they used a further two plots, one at 500 and the other one at 850 meters in altitude, all three planted with centenary "cordón trenzado" braided vines. This is only 11.5% alcohol and has great acidity, a pH of three and seven grams of acidity after full malolactic. Sixty-five percent of the volume matured in 2,500-liter oval oak vats and the rest in 228-liter barriques. This is sharp, vertical, mineral and austere, a white made with rocks—it's pure rock juice (think Vatan or Bageiras), the most mineral of the whites they make. It has some notes of chamomile and combines power and elegance. This is a groundbreaking, world-class white, way better than previous vintages. And it's made from a variety that people say is second class... second class to none! 9,700 bottles produced. It's the largest production to date, and it was bottled in January 2020."
