The Can't Miss Rosé:
2019 Chene Bleu Vaucluse Rosé

Posted by Ian McFadden

Chêne Bleu is my go-to rosé.

I've never encountered a rosé that's such a sure thing. Everyone I recommend Chêne Bleu to loves it and comes back for more.

It's easy for me to understand because each summer I drink piles of Chêne Bleu.

Chêne Bleu hits a somewhat magical equation of freshness, restraint, and intriguing depth of complexity. The sheer simplicity of the combination makes it all the more elusive to achieve.

Part of the story is, of course, terroir. Chêne Bleu is situated at a relatively high elevation, and the soils are limestone. You sense this in the wine's sleek mineral backbone and brightness.

The rosé is mainly sourced from a north-west facing vineyard and another facing south-west. The former receives less sunlight than the latter. No doubt, this helps create the beautifully interwoven snap and richness of the wine. The grapes are what you'd expect from Provence and its surrounding areas - Grenache, Syrah, Cinsault, Mourvèdre, and Rolle, a white grape more commonly known as Vermentino.

Chêne Bleu is a biodynamically farmed estate where grapes have been grown since the Middle Ages. It sits within the UNESCO-designated Mont Ventoux Biosphere Reserve. When Xavier and Nicole Rolet purchased the property in 1993, it had been abandoned for decades. They set out restoring the old buildings, including a priory from the 14th century, and the vines with the intention of producing world-class wines from their isolated location.

The rosé that they turn out is everything you could want. The care that goes into making it is obvious. It's also clear that it originates from a place perfectly suited to rosé production. I strongly suggest that you take advantage of the special 4-pack pricing. You'll find yourself wanting to drink this often during the warm months ahead.
