The Chambolle of the Loire?
2014 Roches Neuves
Saumur Champigny Clos de l'Echelier
L'Echelier might be one of the most elegant renditions of Cab Franc on earth.
It's rare that people compare a Cab Franc to Chambolle, but that's how people talk about l'Echelier.
Over the years, we've watched Thierry Germain's wines grow increasingly finer and more elegant. People have taken notice. Recently, for example, the Revue du Vin de France awarded Roches Neuves their highest ranking (3 Stars), a distinction that they share only with Clos Rougeard in the Loire.
Every time we've offered Roches Neuves, the wines have quickly sold out.
For us, it's the l'Echelier Rouge that best captures the delicate and fine style that has become Roches Neuves' calling card.
Clos de l’Echelier is a 1.8ha clos (a walled vineyard) on hard limestone soils. There's only a thin layer of top soil. The Cab Francs that Roches Neuves releases from here are hauntingly perfumed, bright and energetically mineral. It's one of the most distinctive expressions of the grape.
The 2014 vintage for the Loire is really strong. At this point, it's looking like one of the best we've seen in years. The 2014s have real substance and crystal-clear acidity. Across the board they boast a remarkable sense of poise and completeness.
In 2014, the l’Echelier shows incredible lift and a dark minerality that is beautifully complemented by the bright raspberry and herb-tinged fruits. The aromatics are just stunning and there's a wonderfully sophisticated harmony.
In short, this is a beautiful expression of Cabernet Franc and one that's well worth following for a decade plus.
