The Damned Mountain
2019 François Cotat Sancerre Les Monts Damnés

Posted by Ian McFadden

I'll keep this brief. François Cotat's Monts Damnés has served as an enduring benchmark of what's possible for Sancerre.

Les Monts Damnés is one of the most daunting hills in all of France.

The Sauvignon Blanc that grows on it is easily among the best in the world. It's called the “damned mountains” because of how steep and difficult the site is to work. When you see a picture of Monts Damnés, it's obvious that this is great terroir.

The site owes a good deal of its current fame to François Cotat. His version possesses an imposing structure and mineral tension making it one of the most ageable examples of Sauvignon Blanc on the planet.

The 2019 is a monumental Monts Damnés that's layered and densely packed with its hallmark Kimmeridgian minerality. It works on grand scale with an architecture pulls everything into a very compelling harmony.

Along with Vatan and his cousin Pascal, François Cotat's Sancerres exist on their own plane. These are the time-tested benchmarks of Sancerre, collected by the same people who chase down the best wines in the world. The Monts Damnés is always a favorite.
