For any lover of Pinot Noir, this is simply one of the most linear and silken expressions of the grape out there. It's a wine from the boundary region of viticulture, just outside of Montreal, that flaunts an extreme edgy finesse of detail and elegance.
Harvested in late September, this ballerina-of-a-Pinot Noir still has only 10.7% alcohol and feels simply gossamer in the mouth with a delicate, silken thread of fruit and spice. Extremely reticent upon opening, the wine takes 30+ minutes to begin to reveal its core of crushed red fruit, finely zested spices, soil tones, and an energetic mineral core.
As sheened and razor-sharp as this expression of Pinot Noir is, the mid-palate has an amazingly compact density to it, a concentration with the intensity of a laser.
Domaine du Nival was only founded in 2013; currently the father-and-son team (Denis and Matthieu) farm only three hectares. From the beginning, they have worked both organically and biodynamically.
The 2020 Pinot Noir "Les Entêtés" is a wine of extreme vigor and energy. This is a thrilling region we will be hearing much more about in the future.
