Three Rows of Grand Cru Vines
“Peter’s wines touch my heart.” – Klaus Peter Keller
Klaus Peter Keller has been one of the strongest advocates for the wines of the young grower Peter Leipold, writing some beautiful words.

"For me, Leipold is on the way to becoming a young genius… He has a special feeling for wine, something you don’t learn at school."
Based in Franconia, Leipold shapes Silvaners, Scheurebes, and Rieslings of just astounding clarity, of truly high-fidelity definition. They have quickly found an impassioned audience in the U.S.
Today, we offer a U.S. premiere: The first-ever vintage of Leipold's Grand Cru dry Riesling from the famous Eschendorfer Lump vineyard.
In the fall of 2022, Peter secured 3 rows of vines - exactly 0.092 hectares - that plummet down this limestone hill at nearly a 75% gradient. Everything must be done by hand; this is an extreme vineyard.
The wine is no less extreme.
Leipold's 2023 Riesling Lump has a monumental force, a grandiosity that recalls, in some ways, the GGs of his famous mentor Keller. A rushing array of stone fruit is enlivened and energized by fine edges of citrus fruit, lime zest, and green herbs.
Yet it is the finish that dazzles: a mountain stream of minerals, a textural, polished yet gripping chalky finish that would feel at home in Germany, in Chablis, or Champagne.
But this wine is from Franken, and those who know, know that the acidity, the cut of Franken wines, is second to none.
Join Keller, join us, in praising these wines, in drinking these wines. But do this quickly because three rows of vines don't make very much wine.
