It's rare for Bordeaux to appear in our offers, but occasionally we taste one that shocks us.
Le Puy's 2016 Emilien is a powerful example of a Bordeaux that demands time in the spotlight.
The 2016 Bordeaux vintage has been hailed as one of the greats of the past three decades. The Le Puy dramatizes the purity and finesse that the 2016s possess. I was blown away by the wine when I tasted it recently.
In the context of Bordeaux, Le Puy works on a wavelength that's radically different from the majority. They are a part of Neal Rosenthal's inspired lineup of Bordeaux and should be included with other individualistic Bordeaux producers, like Bel Air Marquis d'Aligre and Domaine du Jaugaret.
Château Le Puy has been in the Amoreau family for over 400 years. The vineyards have never been subjected to chemical treatments. Today, the vines are farmed biodynamically and very little sulphur is added.
The Château is famous for their vertical tastings that often stretch back to the early 1900s. There are numerous reports of stunning bottles at a hundred years old.
The estate is situated on the same plateau as Saint Emilion and Pomerol at a high elevation for the region. The soils are primarily a mix of clay, silex, and limestone. Le Puy's signatures are beautifully suave textures and gorgeous clarity.
The 2016 is amazing in how complete it is. You get length, concentration, elegance, and precision. There's an outrageous dancing and complex minerality to the wine. The combination of power and poise is really compelling.
This is a profoundly eye-opening wine that reminds you that Bordeaux is capable of haunting nuance, delicacy, and complexity. When you find a wine with such beautiful soulfulness and incredible composition, it should not be missed.
