We've been buying Macle's Château-Chalon for fifteen years and we've only landed back-vintages on a few occasions.
We should state from the outset that this is an extremely modest parcel. We expect this to sell out quickly.
Château-Chalon is the Grand Cru of Vin Jaune. It's here that Vin Jaune reaches the pinnacle of refinement and ageworthiness. Curnonsky, a famous 20th Century Parisian gourmet known as the "Prince of Gastronomes," included the wines of Château-Chalon among "the five great white wines of France," along with Montrachet and Yquem.
For us, Macle's Château-Chalon's are some of the best and most moving wines out there. Château-Chalon is the Grand Cru of Vin Jaune. It's here that Vin Jaune reaches its pinnacle of class and ageworthiness. Macle's Château-Chalon boasts a ridiculous depth of complexity. In The New France, Andrew Jefford comments that Macle’s wines, "...seem to rifle through a repertoire of the natural world as you sniff and sip." That gives you a good sense of what you're dealing with.
With age Macle's Château-Chalon gets profoundly nuanced. At nearly forty years old, the 1982 is close to peak maturity and boasts all of the complexity and breeding that comes with it.
Macle's Château-Chalon is the longstanding benchmark of Vin Jaune. In the past couple of years, interest in Macle has exploded. The wines have gotten much harder to find and back-vintages often seem impossible to acquire. Don't miss this.
