The Greatest Clos Ste. Hune?
2007 Trimbach Riesling Clos Ste. Hune
New Release

This is the most eagerly awaited Clos Ste. Hune in some time.

The 2007 vintage in Alsace, as in Germany, was superlative... legendary even. The flowering was record-breakingly early, the growing season long and cool, offering the fruit incredibly long (again, in many cases record-breakingly long) hang-times.

The results are wines of extraordinary extract, profound depth, yet still with bright, buoyant acidities. These are wines with power and finesse.

Trimbach's Clos Ste. Hune is, far and away, the most anticipated release of 2007 from Alsace. This has all the makings of a legendary Clos Ste. Hune. Only time will tell exactly where this wine will rest in the pantheon of Clos Ste. Hunes, but it will be near the top.

As we've written before (more than once), Trimbach’s Clos Ste. Hune belongs among the greatest wines in the world. This much is undeniable; this is the obvious part. As with Montrachet or Clos du Mesnil, Clos Ste. Hune sits in one of those self-referential worlds: Clos Ste. Hune tastes like Clos Ste. Hune in the way Montrachet tastes like Montrachet. In the way salt tastes like salt.

The mineral expression of Clos Ste. Hune is likely one of the most profound in the entire world of wine. For the rock-hound, the mineral freak, the devotee of purity and transparency, few wines are more thrilling than Clos Ste. Hune.

For dry Riesling fans, this is an obvious buy. However, great white Burgundy buyers should also seriously consider this for the cellar.

The actual vineyard, the Clos itself, is a mere 1.67 hectares in size - it produces roughly 9,000 bottles a year, some 750 cases. In other words, quantities are wildly limited.

While this wine comes to the market with well over five years of development in the cellars of Trimbach, the Clos Ste. Hune is also one of the most age-worthy white wines in the world. As Schildknecht writes, the 2007 Clos Ste. Hune "should be absorbing to follow for a quarter century or more."

2007 Trimbach Riesling Clos Ste. Hune

David Schildknecht, Wine Advocate: "Trimbach’s 2007 Riesling Clos Ste-Hune displays genuine intrigue in its array of floral, mineral and animal shadings focusing on narcissus, musk, shimmering crystalline stoniness, alkalinity, and savory salinity. Grapefruit and orange are tinged with juniper berry, quinine, as well as hints of white truffle that enhance the resemblance to 1996 (although Trimbachs compare this with their 2001). And while less austere than the corresponding Frederic Emile, this is no less penetratingly or exhilaratingly long. An amazingly extract- and energy-rich, kaleidoscopically multi-faceted Ste-Hune, it should be absorbing to follow for a quarter century or more."
