Our obsession with this producer is well documented - no fewer than seven offers have gone out in the past few years. Our website offers a mini-library on Angerville, from Ducs to Taillepieds, Caillerets, Champans and beyond...

The very simple truth is that Angerville is among the greatest producers in Burgundy (to say nothing of the fact that the estate is also one of the oldest, most noble names in Burgundy). We put the estate in the same realm as the legends: Rousseau, Roumier, Fourrier, Bachelet, take your pick. For whatever reason, vis-a-vis these guys, the wines of Angerville remain relative steals.

As it always does, the quality here largely comes down to terroir: Angerville has some of the greatest terroirs in Volnay, plain and simple. Their Premier Cru is sourced from five different Premier Cru vineyards and in some cases will contain young-vine fruit from the awesome Clos des Ducs and Caillerets sites. The blending does really result in an extremely "complete" wine, a bottle in which the sum is greater than the parts.

We have made no qualms regarding our love of the 2008 vintage; these wines are for purists and the 08 Angerville Premier Cru is no exception. It drinks with all the poise and grace of a dancer; it is supple and beautifully precise, energetic, showing nuanced fresh red fruit and really, really beautiful clarity and definition. Defined by mild, finely-threaded tannins, this easily has the structure to cellar for at least 10 years, though we've opened numerous bottles over the last few months and they have disappeared quickly.

Let not the low price mislead you in any way; this is a serious bottle of red Burg.
