Don't Miss:
Stunning 2010 Barolo Value
2010 Fenocchio Barolo Villero
"Simply put, 2010 is the greatest young Barolo vintage I have tasted" -Antonio Galloni, Vinous Media
It's hard not to be wowed by the 2010 Barolos. The wines are so beautifully pure, balanced and fine.
The vintage provided the perfect conditions for producers to hit levels of quality that we've never seen from them before. Fenocchio is one of the most impressive success stories of the vintage. We've tasted the past handful of vintages from this traditionally minded producer and have really enjoyed them, but 2010 qualifies as a full-on breakthrough.
It's impossible not to pause on the value that Fenocchio offers. Fenocchio's Barolo Villero is far from basic - Villero is a top site in the Castiglione Falletto commune of Barolo. Fenocchio's parcel of Villero boasts some intense pedigree - up until 1996 it was the source of Giacosa Villero. This is undoubtedly one of the best 2010 Barolos that we'll come across.
Galloni really captures the vintage when he writes that the wines are: "transparent, vibrant Barolos that pulsate with tension, crystalline purity and site-specific nuance."
Fenocchio's 2010 Barolo Villero illustrates the character of the vintage perfectly. It shows the powerful round fruit with layers of floral notes that marks Villero. It's impossible not to repeat that 2010 is a vintage that's all about purity, and Fenocchio's Villero delivers this in a big way. Everything in the Villero is crystal clear, detailed and long.
There's plenty of ripe, fairly silky tannins. If you're drinking now, a nice long decant is advised. Fenocchio works very traditionally. He practices long macerations and ages the wines in old, large Slavonian oak barrels. The wines are simultaneously grippy and delicate and transparent.
Fenocchio's 2010 Barolo Villero is deeply impressive and really well priced. It's because of this very rare intersection of great vintage, quality and price that I place this bottle squarely in the don't miss category.
