Sorrel's Le Gréal is one of the great unsung wines of Hermitage.
For some time, Sorrel's wines have been admired by Rhône insiders but overlooked by many others. The large shadow cast by Jean-Louis Chave's incredible Hermitage leaves producers, like Bernard Faurie and Marc Sorrel, cruising under the radar. The good news is that there are some great values for real-deal Hermitage.
Today's offer drives this point home. We're happy to offer Sorrel's 2006 Hermitage Rouge Le Gréal for $159.95 per bottle.
Hermitage is the chosen land for Syrah. If Côte Rôtie is known for its delicacy and grace, then Hermitage is known for its thundering grandeur and regal elegance. When you think about France's great red wines, you start in Burgundy or Bordeaux and then, quickly land in Hermitage.
Sorrel has only 1.8ha of Syrah planted in Hermitage and the production of Le Gréal is just over 400 cases.
Hermitage is famous for having three top sites - L'Hermite, Les Bessards and Le Méal. Sorrel's Le Gréal is made up of at least ninety percent Le Méal. What remains is sourced from Greffieux, a site that many would argue is just behind the top three. Le Méal is a south-facing, rocky sun trap. It produces wines of muscle and rich fruits. The small amount of Greffieux lends an elegance that tampers the full-throttle intensity of Le Méal.
The 2006 Le Gréal explodes with spice, minerals, game, and floral notes. There's an unapologetically masculine profile with soaring fruit, smoke, and roasted meat. The combination of power and elegance is really impressive.
The 2006 is drinking very well right now, but showing plenty in reserve for another decade of aging. Before closing, I should warn you that this is a small parcel and one that will likely disappear.
