Aurélien Revillot's Bourgueil has become one of the store's favorite Loire reds.
When I first tasted Revillot's wines last fall, I was deeply impressed. Revillot has enjoyed high regard in France for many years, but this was the first time that I had encountered the wines.
Recently, we tasted through the 2017, 2018, and 2019 vintages of Bourgueil sur les Hauts and found the wines seriously good. The 2019 was the standout of the three wines.
Simply put, these are beautiful expressions of Cabernet Franc. They combine a wonderfully silken texture and terroir-soaked Cab Franc character. The wines have an honesty, a textural allure, and rigor that makes them compelling.
Aurélien Revillot is a Burgundian, who after completing an enological degree in Dijon did internships throughout France and around the world, most notably at Domaine de la Romanée-Conti. Ultimately, Revillot ended up at Domaine de la Chevalerie in Bourgueil. Chevalerie may have a low profile in the U.S., but these are among the great examples of Bourgueil. Soon enough, he landed vines of his own and released his first vintage of Bourgueil sur les Hauts in 2012.
The 2019 Bourgueil sur les Hauts boasts explosive and layered spiced red fruits with a richly complex cast of aromatic. On the palate, it's nicely suave with a driving and taut chalky mineral core.
This is one of the most exciting new Loire wines that we've tasted in many years. We're very happy to have an opportunity to offer this.
