The Magic of Dagueneau 2002-2018:
Buisson Renard, Pur Sang, Silex & Sancerre Mont Damnés

The Dagueneau family's work with Sauvignon Blanc is without peer.

There are no examples of the grape that reach an equal amount of depth and sophistication.

Today, we're happy to pay tribute to one of the Loire's elite estates.

Didier Dageneau was one of the larger-than-life figures of wine. His work in Pouilly-Fumé was totally groundbreaking. Under his watch, the appellation reached a level that demanded a place on the world stage. Sadly, in 2008, Didier Dagueneau died in a tragic plane crash. Today, Didier's son and daughter, Louis Benjamin and Charlotte, run the estate, and quality hasn't missed a beat.

The Buisson Menard is a top vineyard site in Pouilly Fumé and the source for Boisson Renard. Though Boisson Renard sometimes gets lost in the shadow of the Silex and Pur Sang, this is one of the most expressive and enjoyable of Dagueneau's lineup. It is a textural exotic Pouilly Fumé that’s disciplined by a powerful, focusing acidity.

Silex is sourced from a vineyard high up on the hill of St. Andelain in Pouilly-Fumé, where there's a significant portion of flinty silex soil and considerably less clay. It is an absolutely riveting bottle. It combines intensity with incredible focus and mineral precision. There is simply no Sauvignon Blanc quite like Silex, and few that age as well.

The Pur Sang offers a fascinating contrast to the Silex, as it's sourced from a parcel north of St. Andelain called La Folie, where there's lots of clay and little silex in the soil. Where the Silex is a bit more restrained, the Pur Sang tends towards gregariousness even as it maintains a crystalline profile and impeccable balance.

While much of Dagueneau's renown comes from his work in Pouilly-Fumé, his rare Sancerre Le Mont Damnés takes their style to the extreme. Dagueneau's parcel in Sancerre is an ultra-steep and chalky parcel in the famed Mont Damnés. Didier Dagueneau had the 0.5ha vineyard planted to his specifications. Dagueneau's example causes a serious reassessment of what Sancerre is capable of.
