The Magic of the Side Valley:
2021 Lauer Ayler Kupp Riesling Kern Fass 9

Posted by Joe Salamone

Egon Müller's Scharzhofberg vineyard is one of the sites farthest away from the actual Saar River. It is one of the coldest sites in this cool place.

This fact, according to a lot of experts, is why the wines can be so magical, so intense, yet so delicate.

Today we present a similar phenomenon, also from the Saar, also further away from the Saar River, deep into the side valley. In the cut and classic 2021 vintage, this is simply one of Lauer's greatest wines.

At as low as $39.95 in 4-packs, this is a wine to go deep on.

Florian Lauer's entire winemaking career has been about articulating the nuances of the formidable mountainside of the Kupp. "Kern," named after the 19th century industrialist who had the site planted, is one of the sites farthest into the valley.

As such, "Kern" is a cold place and the wine always flaunts a refreshing, whip-smart acidity - the crackling tail of a whip. The chiseled, incisive cut of the vintage easily balances the 30+ grams of residual sugar.

The magic of German Riesling, of the Saar, once again proves to be a showstopper. This wine tastes nearly dry on the gripping finish.

This is a truly thrilling vintage. It is one built for the ages. People will catch on fast. We encourage you to snap up the 2021 Kern quickly.

Title

Mosel Fine Wines: "The 2021er “Kern” No. 9, as it is referred to in the central part of the label, is a fully off-dry wine (with 33 g/l of residual sugar) made from fruit picked in a complete cross section (bottom to top) of a prime south-west-facing old-vine parcel (called Kern) situated well into the side valley on the original Ayler Kupp hill. It offers a superbly creamy nose made of vineyard peach, pear, green apple, whipped cream, smoke, and fine spices. The wine is beautifully balanced on the palate driven by zesty acidity, fruity sorbet, and beautifully creamy elements. The finish is racy, focused, and hugely persistent. This is a gorgeous almost fruity-styled tasting Saar Riesling!"
