Les St-Georges is the prize of Gouges’ stable.
If Nuits St. Georges had a Grand Cru, it would be Les St- Georges. It's the most complete, complex and aristocratic of the Nuits 1er Crus.
Gouges is one of the legendary producers of Nuits St. Georges. If you've tasted Gouges from the ‘70s and ‘80s, you know the incredible heights the wines can reach. Almost without fail, Gouges' Les St-Georges is the best of the line-up.
Finding Gouges' Les St-Georges is difficult. It's the wine in the stable that people jump on the quickest. I feel really fortunate to be able to offer a back-vintage Les Saint Georges. I should point out that these are the only bottles available in the country.
Les St-Georges - a combination of stony, limestone and clay soils - is renowned for its impressive structure, muscle and longevity. In Gouges' hands, it’s simultaneously savage and elegant, brimming with vivid dark fruits, earthiness and a deep minerality.
Gouges is known for coming off a bit stern in early drinking, only revealing its true glory in the cellar. What has really impressed us in recent vintages is how Gouges has introduced an element of lift and playfulness without sacrificing any of their signature rigor.
The 2007 Les St-Georges epitomizes this. The 2007 shows incredible finesse, clarity and overall, architecture. It's hard not to be taken aback by the precision and finely tuned structure.
Over a decade in, the 2007s are simply gorgeous. Stephen Tanzer captures the charm of the vintage quite well when he writes "They finish with an almost electric impression of lift and perfume, as if their fine tannins were sparkling on the palate like diamond dust."
I'm very happy to offer this example of one of Burgundy's historic domaines in top form. It's a don't miss.
