The Other Egon Müller
2021 Egon Müller Le Gallais Wiltinger braune Kupp Spätlese

Posted by Joe Salamone

At this point, it's clear that word is out on Egon Müller's 2021s.

Of course, the Scharzhofberg is brilliant across all of the prädikats. With that said,  the most shocking of Müller's 2021s is the Le Gallais Wiltinger braune Kupp Spätlese.

We haven't offered a young vintage from Le Gallais in five years. In 2021, the Le Gallais Spätlese is not to be missed. We've chased after the wine and are happy to offer this modest parcel.

It's easy to understand how Müller's Wiltinger braune Kupp bottlings get overlooked. Müller and his Scharzhofberg are one of the great combinations of winemaker and vineyard. Wiltinger braune Kupp is a very different site than Scharzhofberg. Where Scharzhofberg is a fairly cool site, even for the Saar, Wiltinger braune Kupp is one of the riper vineyards of the Saar. In short, the two wines work on entirely different registers.

The 2021 has a stunning high-toned lift that Müller coaxed out of this typically darker, spiced site. It carries a walk-on-tip-toe finesse that only Müller pulls off this well. The wine possesses an elegance and shimmering radiance that’s really impressive.

We've had many great experiences with old bottles of Le Gallais and the 2021 Spätlese has all of the markings of a vintage that will age beautifully. Please keep in mind that quantities are very limited.

Mosel Fine Wines: "The 2020er Wiltinger braune Kupp Riesling Spätlese AP 05 was fermented down to sweet levels of residual sugar. It proves rather restrained and even reduced at first and needs quite some time to reveal some ripe, luscious, and very complex scents of pineapple, orange peel, mango, pear, a touch of quince, blackberry, almond cream, and a whiff of honey already lurking in the background. The wine proves highly fruity, smooth, and yet delicate on the palate but reveals a more spicy and herbal side in the focused, persistent, and intense finish. Sweetness still dominates the aftertaste of this wine with Auslese presence. This beauty will really only shine in a decade."
