The easiest way to introduce Clerico's 2010 Spanna is by saying that we opened a bottle to taste with the staff and it was empty within minutes.
Spanna is what they call Nebbiolo in these Northern reaches. We've been beating the drum for the Nebbiolos of Northern Piedmont for some time, and Clerico's 2010 Spanna may best show why we keep returning to the category.

My Rosenthal sales rep sent me an email months ago saying "buy this!" And now that it's finally here, I have to say she was spot on. It's simply a gorgeously perfumed and energetic value, an archetypal example of the great 2010 vintage in Piedmont.
The combination of nimbleness, acid drive, complexity and price makes Clerico's 2010 Spanna something that we want to have around in quantity.
Before we go any further, we need to mention that only 1,500 bottles were produced - this is very limited.
Neal Rosenthal in his storied career has brought to light some very soulful (and now very famous) estates: Fourrier in Burgundy, Paolo Bea and Ferrando in Italy, to name but a few...
Clerico is a new addition to his portfolio (we introduced their wines last year) and is quickly joining the ranks of favorites from the Northern Piedmont, right there with Ferrando.
Nearly everyone we've spoken with has said that 2010 is a killer vintage in the Piedmont, and Clerico's 2010 Spanna shows why they're so excited. There's a clarity, a ripe silken acid spine, and good concentration that's really impressive. It delivers a medley of bright cherry fruit, flowers, crushed rock and sweet herbs all wrapped around a mountain briskness.
We hear again and again that it's getting harder and harder to find honest, intriguing wines for everyday consumption. Clerico's 2010 is a great bottle to have in your arsenal.
