The Other Side Of Coche:
2018 Coche-Dury Volnay 1er Cru

Posted by Ian McFadden

"This youthfully austere effort is excellent though note well that patience is absolutely recommended." -Burghound

Coche's reds are monumental Burgundies. Like the whites, they are very concentrated, show great detail, and have a riveting clarity of expression.

The entire red lineup is stunning but if I had to limit myself to a single wine, it would certainly be the Volnay 1er Cru.

The vineyards that the Volnay 1er Cru are sourced from are two of the village's best 1er Crus, Clos des Chênes, and Taillepieds. The Volnay 1er Cru offers a high-toned bright cherry fruit into the mix along with a very elegant and silken palate.

Coche's Volnay 1er Cru ages amazingly well on its density and balance. As Burghound's note makes clear, the 2018 will pay major dividends in the cellar: "This youthfully austere effort is excellent though note well that patience is absolutely recommended."

I'm going to wrap this up. I'll just warn you that quantities are extremely limited. The tiny quantities that are produced keep word from spreading too far about Coche's reds, but those who know tend to jump at the chance to buy them.

Burghound: "Here the even spicier and more elegant nose displays beautifully pure various red and dark berries where a very pretty floral top note appears. While there is only average density the refined and equally pure medium weight flavors possess ample power and minerality on the firm, serious and indisputably built-to-age finish. This youthfully austere effort is excellent though note well that patience is absolutely recommended."
